BC Hydro wants your opinion on long-term clean energy planning

my letter to bc hydro:

i like the idea of public ownership of natural resources.  that means all of us are shareholders, not just the government or corporate executives of the day, or private business people.  we all live on the earth, and the earth's resources ought to be equally available to all of us, not just those who can afford them.

i also like the idea of living simply.  for example, i share a two bedroom apartment, ride an electric bike, i'm vegan, i buy local organic vegetables, bulk grains, i reuse whenever possible, compost, and i recycle in the blue box and at the monthly plastics depot.  my flat mate and i produce about one small grocery bag of garbage every four months, only because there's nowhere else to put some things.

the future is dependent on people, like me and my friends, who choose to live with a light footprint.  we don't need a lot of energy, but the energy we need is truly needed.  we are not the ones creating the global climate crisis, but we will suffer because of those who use more energy than they need or deserve.

it is ridiculous to insist that we invest in lightbulbs that contain mercury.  i've spent thousands of dollars removing all the mercury that dentists dumped in my body, and detoxifying after being quite seriously poisoned with it.  it's absurd to start producing lightbulbs, most of which will end up in the landfills, that contain mercury.  if you want to save energy in a big way, tell the office buildings and government buildings to shut off their lights at night.  it's not only a big waste of energy, it's creating a crisis for birds.

as we proceed into some collective future, i would like to see publically owned and managed, safe and clean wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal energy.  we don't need the site c dam.  we don't need to make energy for profit, to sell energy to greedy us-americans so they can light up their cities and golf courses and hollywood mansions.  energy is a public right, accessing affordable energy for basic human needs is in keeping with canada's charter of rights and freedoms that maintains we all have the right to life, liberty, and security of person.  i don't mind investing in energy needs, but i do mind being forced to pay for ridiculous earth destroying projects that will encourage and support exorbitant lifestyles.

we all live on stolen native land.  let's keep that in mind as we proceed into whatever future you insist on imposing upon us.

Public, First Nations and stakeholders are invited to help shape B.C.‚s clean energy future by sharing their ideas with BC Hydro. Open houses at locations around the province are taking place in March and April, allowing the public to provide direct input on how future growth in demand for electricity will be met.

If you are unable to attend an open house, you can submit your feedback online at www.bchydro.com/irp or by emailing integrated.resource.planning@bchydro.com.

As BC Hydro prepares to celebrate 50 years of providing British Columbians with clean, reliable electricity, we want to hear from you about how we set the course over the coming decades. While British Columbians are doing more than ever to conserve electricity, B.C.‚s overall electricity use is expected to continue to increase as a result of projected population growth and increased demand in the industrial sector.

As a Site C Clean Energy Project stakeholder you are invited to attend a public open house:
